Black, H. (2014). The
coldest girl in Coldtown. New York: Little Brown Books for Young Readers.
Summary: Tana wakes up after a party surrounded by corpses that had been killed by vampires that were still in the house. She saves herself, her infected boyfriend, and a chained up vampire. Tana decides to head to Coldtown, a town where vampires and people who have been infected (turning Cold) go to live. On the way the join up with prospective vampire twins, Midnight and Winter, who are heading the same way. The chained vampire, Gavriel, is there to kill another vampire named Lucien. Midnight attacks Tana and officially infects her with the Cold. Tana realizes that her sister, Pearl has come to look for her. She helps friendly vampires escape so that they can find her sister and keep her safe. Tana kills Lucien when he attacks her and realizes that Gavriel is the head vampire. Aiden saves Pearl and she is given a pass to get out of Coldtown. Gavriel stays with Tana until the infection is over and he tells her he loves her.
Commentary: The Coldest Girl in Coldtown involves quite a bit of conflict. Tana has to fight save her friends from the vampires that are threatening them. She must also contend with the conflict within herself when she becomes infected with the Cold. The setting of the story has a lot of influence on the story. Coldtown portrayed to the rest of the world as very flashy and fun with never ending parties. In reality, it is a very dark and hard place to live. It is not glamorous at all.
